Project No. 3: Winsor Trail between Forest Road 102 and the Jaun Trail – scout trail for adequacy of signage, recommend and install temporary signs as needed, order new permanent signs, and install signs upon their delivery.
Project status: US Forest Service approved
Date Planned: Summer 2024
Location: Winsor Trail between its junction with the Juan Trail and its junction with Forest Road 102.
Project summary: The project will consist of: 1) Scouting the Winsor between the Juan Trail and FR to determine the adequacy of signage and signage placement; 2) Recommending and installing temporary signs as appropriate; 3) Specking and ordering Forest Service approved permanent signs; and 4) and installing the permanent signs upon their receipt, including removal of temporary signs that were previously installed. In addition, deteriorating signposts will be replaced at several locations, and a limited number of new signposts will be installed, and at some locations the sign post may be relocated to increase visibility. The number of volunteers required could vary from 2-4 volunteers depending on the task to be accomplished and the number of tools and supplies (signs & post) that must be carried to the work site. Due to the distance over which signs and/or posts will be installed, completion of this project is estimated to take approximately 4-6 workdays.
Maintenance activity: There are three activities associated with this project: 1) The trail will be scouted to determine the adequacy of the existing signage and its placement; 2) Temporary signs will be recommended, printed, and installed; 3) Forest Service approved permanent signs will be specified and ordered; 4) Upon arrival the permanent signs will be installed and any temporary signs removed; 5) Where necessary new sign post will be installed (new additional sign or to replace a deteriorated sign. Some post may be relocated to increase visibility.
Activity level: The level of physical effort to complete these tasks will vary. Physical activity factors associated with replacing the temporary signs with permanent signs include packing in the replacement signs and the tools and materials (drill, screwdriver, wrench, bolts, etc.) required to mount the signs.
The level of physical effort required to replace an existing post or install a new post will typically be higher than simply installing a new sign. An assortment of digging tools must be packed to the site where the new post is to be installed or an existing post relocated, and a hole dug for the post. Post-hole digging may be relatively easy or difficult depending on the soil composition (soft, hard, rocky, etc). In addition, a replacement post must either be packed in or a tree cut and prepared to serve as a signpost.
Factors that may affect physical stamina requirements include the distance from the trailhead to the sign and/or post-installation work site, any gain and loss in elevation between the trailhead and the work site, the type and number of tools that must be packed into the work site, and whether a signpost must be packed in, or a signpost cut from a nearby tree or log. These will vary depending on the work site’s location and its distance from the nearest trailhead. Specific details (activity, tools required, distance to work site, gain and loss in elevation) will be provided for each daily task.
