Project No. 2: Winsor Trail starting at approximately 0.5 miles above the Ski Basin Parking Lot and extending to the Pecos Wilderness Boundary- tread repair, drainage adjustment, and light brushing.

Project status: US Forest Service approved

Date Planned: Summer/Fall 2024

Location: Winsor Trail starting at approximately 0.5 miles above the between the Ski Basin parking Lot and extending to the Pecos Wilderness Boundary

Project summary: This project is a continuation of maintenance activity on the Winsor Trail that was begun in the summer of 2023. This section of the Winsor Trail has sections that are severely eroded, some of which are only getting worse.  This project will accomplish the following: 1) Remove rocks and roots from the trail, 2) where appropriate, combine multiple tracks into a single track, 3) adjust the tread for drainage, including removing the berm on the downhill side of the trail where it prevents water from draining off the trail, 4) very light brushing. It is estimated that this project will last through much of the summer and may be done concurrently with other projects.

Maintenance activity: Pry bars, pick Mattocks, and cutting tools will be used to remove rocks and roots from the trail, picks and other tools will be used to remove the berm on the downhill side of the trail to facilitate drainage, pick Mattocks, grubbing hoes, shovels, and racks will be used to grade the trail, and logs will be cut and positioned along one short section of trail to create steps to stop erosion. To accomplish the project a variety of tools will be used including pick Mattocks, small saws, shovels, rakes, Pulaski, axes, and rock bars.

Activity level: Physical activity will range from light to laborious depending on the activity one chooses to do. For example, the removal of rocks and roots from the trail can be laborious depending on the rock or root size, while using a rake to grade the trail tread is generally light.

Distance: The section of the Winsor Trail on which maintenance is to be performed is between 0.5 and 0.9 miles from the Ski Basin trailhead.

Elevation: The maximum gain and loss in elevation between the trailhead and the work site will vary from 0 feet to approximately 600 feet. There will be a gain in elevation to reach the work site.
