Project No. 5: Bear Wallow Trail and Borrego trail before junction with Bear Wallow:

Downed tree removal, removing tree debris encroaching on the trail, brushing, and minor tread adjustments to facilitate trail drainage

Project status: Approved by the Forest Service

Date Planned: Summer/Fall 2024

Location: The Borrego Trail from the Hyde Park Road trailhead to its junction with the Bear Wallow trail, and the Bear Wallow Trail from its junction with the Borrego Trail to its junction with the Winsor Trail.

Project summary: This project is a continuation of a project started in 2022.  Maintenance was completed on approximately 40% of these trail sections in 2022. Downed trees blocking the trail or tree logs and tree debris encroaching on the trail will be sawed and moved off the trail, brushing will be performed, and minor tread repair performed.

Minimum crew size is from two to four volunteers depending on the size of the log to be cut, the number of cuts required, the complexity of the sawing to be performed, the distance that the logs or debris must be moved, the type of other tasks being performed, and hiker safety. Hiker safety may require the use of volunteers to prevent trail users from entering the work site while sawing operations are underway.

This project will be spread over several months and may be performed concurrently with maintenance projects being performed at other locations.

Maintenance activities: Sawing and the removal of downed trees blocking the trail using crosscut and other saws, sawing and or physical removal of logs and tree debris encroaching on the trail, brushing small tree saplings growing in or encroaching on the trail, removing lose tree debris from the trail, and minor tread repair to facilitate trail drainage.  Tools will include a crosscut saw, small and medium pruning saws, loppers, axes, a pick mattock, a cant hook, and a rake.

Activity level: Physical requirements will range from light to laborious depending on the activity being performed. Pruning is generally light duty, use of a crosscut saw is typically medium duty, and the movement of logs and debris off the trail can be laborious.

Distance: This will vary from approximately 50 feet to 1.5 miles depending on the work site location.

Elevation: Approximately 9,000 feet at the trailhead to 8200 feet at the most remote work site location. There is an elevation loss going to the works sites, and an elevation gain when returning to the trailhead.
