Project 8:

Project status: US Forest Service Approved

Date Planned: Summer/Fall 2024

Location: Winsor Trail between its junction with the Lower Nambe Trail and its junction with the Nambe Lake Trail.

Project summary: This project will consist of performing tread maintenance on this section of the Winsor Trail. The trail section to be worked is approximately 1.0 miles.  This section of the trail is very rocky and is difficult for tired hikers returning from Nambe Lake or Santa Fe Baldy to navigate. In FY 2019 rock and root removal, tree debris removal, trail rerouting, and drainage adjustments were performed on the Winsor Trail between the Pecos Wilderness Boundary and its junction with the Lower Nambe Trail. This project will be a continuation of that maintenance activity. The minimum crew size is three. This may be one of the more difficult projects undertaken by the TERMITES given the level of effort required to remove medium size rocks, and the distance the work site is from the trailhead.

Maintenance activity: Rocks and roots will be removed from the trail to the extent feasible. Following rock and root removal, the tread surface will be smoothed, graded, and compacted to the extent feasible to facilitate trail drainage. Work will include sloping the trail to facilitate drainage. Tools will include pick Mattocks, Pulaskis, pry bars, shovels, rakes, and small saws.

Activity level: Physical requirements will range from moderate to arduous, with the most arduous work being associated with removing larger rocks and roots from the trail.  For the most part, rocks once removed can be easily rolled off the downhill side of the trail. Grading is generally a light to moderate in physical requirements.

Distance: The work site is located between 1.3 and 2.3 miles from the Ski Basin Trailhead.

Elevation: The gain and loss in elevation between the trailhead and the work site is approximately 600 feet.  From the Ski Basin trailhead, one hikes uphill to the Wilderness Boundary and then gradually downhill to the work site.
