Corner Fence Replacement Project

2023 Maintenance Season

At the junction of the connecting lateral trail and the start of the second long switchback, a corner fence had been installed to prevent hikers from shortcutting. Over time the fence which was constructed of logs had become severely deteriorated and rotten. It was decided to replace the fence during the 2023 Summer Maintenance season. The fence was reconstructed using nearby logs. A five-person team first removed the old log fence and then installed a new log fence using a triangle design. Where logs are joined, they are notched in order to lock the logs in place. The replacement fence is two logs high.

Activities associated with this project included: 1) Planning for the work and informing the team of details and actions associated with reconstructing the fence; 2) removing the deteriorated corner fence and disposing of it away from the work site; 3) selecting logs for use in rebuilding the fence; 4) sawing the logs to the appropriate length; 5) manually moving the logs into position; 6) notching the log ends using a log cabin notch; 7) and locking the logs in place using the notches. In addition, persons were assigned to monitor hikers for hikers and to stop work so that the hikers could safely pass through the work zone.
